After the destruction suffered during the Second World War and the subsequent mutilation of the city with the reconstruction, Livorno has lost much of its historical legacy, even if they resist vestiges of its various phases: in particular the structure of the city center, a pentagon fortified constructed according to the criteria of the ideal city of sixteenth century. Many also have churches, temples and cemeteries of different faiths, the symbol of a perfect marriage of different races and peoples, who have greatly influenced the city's culture. This spirit of mutual tolerance, joined in the past to the enlightened policy of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, in fact, created an intense cultural activity.
